Baltimore Ravens safety Matt Elam was arrested on Sunday in connection with multiple drug charges and reckless driving. He is now being held on a $15,500 bond.
Twenty-five year old Elam was booked at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami on charges of possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana, possession of marijuana with the intent to deliver or sell and possession of a controlled substance, oxycodone. In addition, he also faces reckless driving charges.
Police said they pulled over Elam for reckless driving as his dark blue Range Rover passed an unmarked police car at a very high rate of speed and swerved into the lane in front of the police car, causing its driver to pump the brakes in order to avoid a collision.
After Elam was pulled over from his vehicle, police discovered 126.2 grams of marijuana as well as 3 grams of oxycodone inside the vehicle.
Adding more trouble to Elam, One of his co- passengers, Calvin Stewart, was found with a loaded semi-automatic pistol in his waistband area. Stewart admitted that he didn't have a permit to carry such weapon, police said.
This isn't the first substance-related incident for Elam. In October 2015, he was suspended for one game for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. He was on injured reserve at the time.
The Ravens already announced they would not re-sign Elam when his contract expires next month.
Elam was benched from the starting lineup in the middle of the 2014 season after struggling to cover receivers deep and missing tackles. He dealt with a knee injury last year, and much of his time on the field was on special teams.
