Think Before You Write

June 01, 2010.

Writing is not just taking a pen and jotting down things. You need to think for some great ideas and thoughts. But where do the ideas come from? They come from our thought processes. It's only when you think, you can start writing. Sometimes, we need to unleash our wildest dreams and imagination, for some great ideas. So think hard on what you want to convey before you start anything. Make it a habit to extensively research on the latest trends and topics of writing. Moreover, make sure that you write every day. Find out a fixed time to write, the part of the day you can concentrate more, morning, noon or evening.

One of the most important steps learning to become a better writer is to just “start writing.” If you don't start writing, you never will. Once you have thought of what you want to convey, jot it down, it may not necessarily be in a sequence, but you at least need to start the main step. It may so happen that nothing comes to your mind and this may seem intimidating. Once you are intimidated you may be distracted and start checking your mails or play games. Don't 'ever' do that, your dreams of becoming a writer would remain then, only a 'dream'. Just start typing whatever comes to your mind, this would open up your 'writers block'. Once you get going, ideas would automatically flow and things would get easier. Make sure to concentrate only on writing and not multitask.

While writing make sure that you use a good dictionary to help you convey moods of a particular situation in a variety of ways by using different words. Try using a thesaurus as there are innumerable possible derivations of a word or phrase. This would give you a better insight into the usage of a word and how best you can use them. If you have used the same word a number of times in a paragraph, try using synonyms of that word, or else it would give an impression that you lack in vocabulary.
