Healthy foods do not necessarily need to be expensive. Here are five that you can buy for under a dollar.
Apples – are good for quick snacks, in green salads, fruit salads and main dish salads. The typical sized serving would be one large apple that would cost about $1 with a good brand apple going for $1.98 per pound. A large apple should weigh a half pound. One serving would be about 117 calories with five grams of fiber. An apple provides 17 percent for daily Vitamin C requirements and seven percent for potassium.
Bananas – are good in snacks, fruit salads as well as yogurt parfaits and smoothies. A serving of one banana costs about 45 cents, selling for around $.88 per pound. A large banana weighs about a half pound. One serving provides 121 calories with 3.5 grams of fiber. It provides 487 mg of potassium which is 14 percent of daily requirements and 20 percent for Vitamin C.
Canned Beans – are good choices for casseroles, green salads, stews and chili. You can find a variety of beans from 50 percent less sodium kidney beans and black beans to garbanzo and white beans. A typical can provides 3.5 one-half cup servings. A 15-ounce can costs about a dollar with one serving around 28 dents. A serving of beans provides 120 calories, seven grams protein, six grams fiber and about six percent daily requirement for calcium and 10 percent for iron.
Canned Tomatoes – are excellent choices for many ethnic recipes including Mexican and Italian and are great in chili, stews and casseroles. There are a variety of choices from no-salt stewed to diced tomatoes flavored with olive oil and garlic. Each can provides 3.5 one-half cup servings with each serving costing about 28 cents. A 14.5 ounce can goes for $1 and store brands can be had for less. Each serving produces 25 calories and one gram of fiber. A serving provides 10 percent of the daily requirement for Vitamin A and 15 percent for Vitamin C.
